How to Unblock Drains (DIY)

Blocked drains are one of the most serious, yet common housing problem that you can find in most properties in Sydney. Drains are essential to your property, yet at most times they are overlooked. Drains serve as channels for water to enter your property and sewage to exit your property. It is more often than not the case, where these channels get blocked and cause serious problems that should be handled immediately. Blocked drains are caused by the presence of foreign objects inside the drains, in which these objects could be stuck inside the drain or damage the drain. When these objects are present, they can often make it difficult for water and/or sewage to go through and cause them to pile up. This is often the case when water would not come out of your taps, sinks, etc. However, if not treated immediately, blocked drains can cause significant damage to these channels, and even your property (e.g. pipe burst, flooding, etc.)

When you are facing a blocked drain situation, the best option is to immediately call a plumber that can provide effective and immediate solution for each of your plumbing problems. Your local plumbers should be able to come up with the proper and professional solutions to unblocking drains. However, if you are feeling confident, you can try do it yourself. Below we list down a number of ways of how you can unblock a drain by yourself.

  1. Use a plunger. Do it the old-fashioned way and grab ol’, trusty plunger. This is probably the most traditional ways to unblocking drains. It’s simple and it’s doable by almost anyone. It is hard work, of course, but it has been proven to work for a number of years. All you need to do is fill the appliance with a few inches of water, before placing the plunger above the drain and moving it up and down.
  2. Snaking the u-bend. Removing the u-bend and then snaking the drain using the proper tools is also another way to unblock drains. Using this method means directly confronting the object and removing it. However, it is essential that you have the proper tools to do the job. Please do be aware of how to properly remove and snake the u-bend.
  3. Using chemical drain cleaning products. There are many drain cleaning products that are available in the market. New “chemical agents” are emerging as people look for an easier solution to unblock drains. However, please be aware that some of these chemical products might prove harmful to your drains. It can “eat” up your drains by corroding the surface slowly. It is important to note that you should never mix more than one type of these products.
  4. Pour a mixture of baking soda and vinegar. Pouring a mixture of baking soda and vinegar, before pouring hot water into your drains is another method of clearing your drains of any blockages. However, please note that hot water can damage your pipes. You should never pour hot water into PVC pipes.

The methods above might prove to work. However, there are times where these solutions won’t work, especially in the case of emergencies, you need to have an immediate response. Pipe relining provides you with the perfect solution for your blocked drain problems.
